THE LAWYERS HAVE SPOKEN

Please Review Our Submission Guidelines

Death Wish Memoirs is a literary project collecting anonymous submissions about the private wish that another person did not exist.

This is a project about thought and desire.

By submitting, you agree to the following:

1. Anonymity

All submissions must be anonymous.

Do not include:

  • Real names

  • Nicknames

  • Specific locations

  • Dates

  • Job titles

  • Workplace details

  • Schools, institutions, or organisations

  • Physical descriptions

  • Unique biographical details

  • Any combination of details that could identify a real person

Submissions may be edited, fictionalised, broadened, or excluded to preserve anonymity.

If anonymity cannot be maintained, the submission will not be included.

2. Thought, Not Threat

Submissions must describe a thought, feeling, fantasy, or private admission.

Do not submit:

  • Threats

  • Plans

  • Instructions

  • Statements of intent

  • Calls to action

  • Encouragement of violence

  • Celebration of real-world harm

Write what you thought, not what you intend to do.

Submissions that suggest intent, planning, instruction, or encouragement will be excluded.

3. Excluded Subject Matter

Do not submit material involving:

  • Political violence

  • Religious violence

  • Ideological violence

  • Racially or ethnically motivated violence

  • Public figures

  • Identifiable private individuals

  • Minors as the subject of harm

  • Current or ongoing threats

  • Active legal matters

  • Specific criminal allegations

Submissions containing excluded subject matter will not be considered.

4. Specific Emotion, Abstract Detail

Focus on the emotional truth.

You may write about:

  • What the person represented

  • What they took, ruined, withheld, or embodied

  • The moment the thought appeared

  • The feeling behind the wish

  • The private logic of the thought

Avoid traceable facts.

Use broad, non-identifying language wherever possible.

5. No Justification Required

You do not need to explain yourself.

You do not need to be fair, moral, reasonable, sympathetic, or likable.

You do not need to provide evidence.
You do not need to defend the thought.
You do not need to redeem yourself.

Clarity matters more than virtue.

6. No Judgement, No Redemption Arc

There is no expectation of growth, forgiveness, closure, or resolution.

This is not therapy.
This is not confession for absolution.
This is not an invitation to act.

It is documentation.

7. Editorial Control

All submissions may be edited before publication.

Edits may be made for:

  • Anonymity

  • Clarity

  • Length

  • Tone

  • Structure

  • Publication suitability

Details may be changed, removed, fictionalised, or broadened.

Submissions may also be combined, excerpted, adapted, or excluded at the editor’s discretion.
